Buy a weather station
 You are interested in weather observations and want to buy a weather station. But what should be your station like? What do you do with the weather information? What about the placement of sensors? Here you can read all about buying a weather station.

What should be your station?
 Determine the requirements your weather station would need, e.g .:
  • Weather forecast
  • Simple weather > only outside temperature (and humidity measurement).
  • Extended weather > Outside temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, wind direction.
  • Storage of weather data for historical data retrieval.
  • Presentation of weather information on a weather station display or via the Internet on your PC, tablet or smartphone?
  • Expansion capabilities for additional sensors such as UV sensor, solar sensor, Sun hours sensor, additional temperature and humidity sensors, temperature etc.
  • Sharing your weather data with aggregate sites like WOW KNMI. Wunderground, Wind Finder HetWeerActueel, AWEKAS etc.

After buying install your weather
So your station arrived. Unpack and install. What are the issues?

The display

  • Receives wireless data from the sensors.
  • Obstacles (walls, glass, electrical appliances, interference sources) weaken the signal.
  • Poor reception?
       > Practical max distance of the display is about 30-50% of the max "line of sight" distance.  
       > Check "Range Reduction Guide" below for optimal mounting.
       > Devices using the same frequency (i.e. babyphones), also of your nieghbours, can weaken the signal.
       > Avoid electrical devices within 1m from the display.
       > Troubleshooting:
       > 1. Test your sender in line of sight (inside) with the display.
       > 2. O.k.? Then: Place sender outside near wall/window.
       > 3. O.K.? Dan: Place sender at larger distance, avoiding obsacles as much as possible.
  • See examples below for signal decrease by moving through different materials:
  • The barometer or pressure sensor is almost always placed in the display and is measuring absolute pressure.
  • The relative pressure is the absolute pressure calculated back to sea level value.
  • Being sure we all use the same base, absolute values are being recalculated to relative (sea level) pressure.
  • Air pressure decreases 1hPa by every 8m elevation.
  • If the sea level air pressure is 1012 hPa. At a 16m higher position pressure will be 1010 hPa
  • In many cases, the current relative air pressure can be set on the display. Current relative air pressure can be found quickly via the internet.
  • The location of the display is not relevant in respect to the measurements of the pressure sensor.

The temperature / humidity sensor
  • The air temperature is the correct measured value, which will be the same in a sunny place, in wind and in the shade.
  • The sensor can best be installed out of the sun (solar radiation increases temperature measurements), and out of the rain (sensor will last longer).
  • The north (/ northeast) facade of house or garage is a great place. Half a meter beneath an overhanging roof provides sufficient protection against potential rainfall.
  • For the Professional Series weather stations the rain and sun protection does not apply.
  • Make sure the wind has free play around the sensor.

The rain gauge
  • Is self emptying and loves free space around it.
  • Make sure that there are no obstacles at an angle of 45° upwards .
  • Place it best perfectly horizontal.
  • The funnel can become clogged by leaves and so. For ease of cleaning place at an easily accessible location.
  • Mounted on a paving stone and placed on an easily accessible flat roof is an excellent location.

The anemometer
  • Mounted as much as possible above obstacles or in open field is a good location .
  • With a mast on a wall, if possible above the ridge is a good mounting location.
  • Keep in mind that most wireless anemometers operate on batteries that need to be replaced occasionally.
  • The use of lithium batteries ensures minimal maintenance.
